Spirituality in ashram is a way of life. The ashram wakes up to a new life everyday at Brahmamuhurtham (early hours of
the morning), which is most auspicious for spiritual sadhana (spiritual exercise). The aspirants chant the Pranava, the
primordial sound, which creates powerful vibrations. This is followed by Suprabatham (verses in praise of the Lord),
which seeks to awaken the divinity within. The nagarsankirtan (going round singing bhajans) performed by men and
women (separately) purifies the atmosphere with divine vibrations.
The most coveted hour at Prasanthi Nilayam is darshan (which means sight of a holy person). During darshan,
Bhagawan walks among the devotees, who are seated in the Sai Kulwant Hall, accepting their letters, listening to their
prayers, clarifying their doubts, solving their problems, healing their diseases (physical and mental), and uplifting them.
Regarding darshan, Bhagawan Himself said, "My darshan is My gift to mankind".
Bhagawan chooses some people for interviews, and the moments spent with Bhagawan in the interview room are the
most precious moments in the life of spiritual aspirants. In these interviews, many a devotees is baptized and is brought
to pristine purity, for the devotee is washed in the divine waters of love that flow from the fountain of prema (divine love)
that is Bhagawan Himself. The most mysterious, mystifying and elevating things happen in the interview room.
Bhagawan fulfils the innermost wishes of devotees --material and spiritual. The interview is, in fact, an "inner view" for
many spiritual aspirants.
The interviews are followed by bhajans (devotional songs) in the mandir (temple). Bhajans in Prasanthi Nilayam are
unique in that they are of universal scope and appeal. The bhajans extol deities of different religions and uphold the
unity of faiths. Hindus and Muslims, Jews and Christians, Buddhists and Jains, Parsis and Sikhs--all find themselves
equally at home while singing bhajans in Prasanthi Nilayam. It is a unique experience to sit in the mandir and have the
vision of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba seated on a throne absorbing the prayers of His devotees during bhajans.
Bhagawan blesses His devotees again in the late afternoon with darshan followed by bhajans.
Between the interviews and bhajans, Bhagawan is usually busy talking to people on the veranda of the mandir
--doctors, staff of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, staff of the Books & Publications Trust, etc. will be ther
at the right time to discuss topics with Bhagawan. Bhagawan may also talk to students (in the afternoon) and walk
among the devotees again at this time.
Bhagawan busy throughout the day and is ever in action so that mankind may emulate His example.
