Prana Yama and Prana Kryia
Pranayama and Pranakriya
These meditations are designed to regulate and balance the flow of oxygen and prana
(energy) to different parts of the body. The meditations involve the use of different mudras
(hand-positions) to affect different parts of our physical and psychic bodies. There are three
parts to Pranayama that regulate oxygen to the lower, middle and upper parts of the body
respectively, and similarly, there are three parts to Pranakriya that regulates prana (energy)
to the lower, middle and upper parts of the body respectively.
Breathing: During each hand-position, you should breathe slowly and deeply, and the
exhalation should be slower and longer than the inhalation (Preferably twice as long). To
begin gently close your eyes and maintain awareness on your breath.
Posture: Use a position that is both comfortable and allows you to maintain a straight spine.
Thus, you can change your posture in the middle of the meditation to maintain your comfort
and to help you keep the spine straight.
Mudras (Hand Positions): The hand positions are described below in sequence. The
meditation is to be done in sequence with one position flowing into the next. At the end of
one section gently move into the next position and continue with your meditation.
Begin with breath awareness, then slowly regulate your breathing so that it is slow and long
and the exhalation is longer than the inhalation. Then move into each position in turn. You
can take a short break between Pranayama and Pranakriya if you like.
