Dear Joseph,
It's an honor to be traveling with you to Don Alejandro's inaguration and I'm extremely excited, to say the least.
I just wanted to tell you a little about myself and my background and how it may tie in with what we are doing.
At the moment I'm working as a practicing shaman and energy healer. I"ve studied with shaman from Peru, Brazil
and with Native American Medicine people. Two years ago I closed my own center so I could travel and work on
my book about the importance of connecting to the Earth. Before that I worked for women's rights.
Many years ago, while living in Massachusetts, I discovered that there was a Mayan population starting to form in
New Bedford, MA. I joined an NGO called AIFC...American Indian Friends Coalition at that time. We were a small
but determined group, helping to locate the new arrivals, find them housing, medical assistance, and legal
assistance. I met with the women to see how we could assist them. I later taught English to a group of the men
working in the fish processing plants along with my friend Patricia Gilmore, founder of PAWHA a non-profit
developed to teach self-health care to the indigenous of the Americas. We were often sought out by the Mayan
community when they were ill be cause they trusted my shamanic healing techniques using stones like their
mothers, and healers used in Guatemala. Patricia practiced Asian medicine. During all of this time, I was to learn
Spanish in exchange for teaching English, however, not all of them spoke Spanish, and most of them did not write
spanish......and we functioned so well communicating from the heart.......that I never did learn Spanish....they did
however, learn English. Somehow, I'm always able to communmicate and understand and make myself
understood.
Although I have not been as active with the Mayan community in several years, I do stay in touch and help out as
best I can. I believe the community of less than 500 has grown to well over 10,000 now. While I was working with
the NGO, the city of New Bedford came to embrace these people providing clinics for them and even putting a
sub-police station on the waterfront to protect them on paydays.....they were being mugged on the way home. The
University of Massachusetts even set up special classes for them. Of course with immigration reform it's been
tough but there are a group of immigration lawyers that work helping them as best they can.
I thought it might be nice to have a letter from the Elder of the New Bedford Community to bring to Don Alejandro
and will work to procure one before our trip.
So that is a little background about me. I already know of you and your work with Common Passion and commend
you for it.
